Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/entrepreneurship?
I started my career as Electrical Contractor with a consultancy firm in Civil Engineering. I left the firm after two years to start my own business with the financial help of my family. Thus, I opened my sole proprietorship company, providing Decoration and Electrical Services to Residential, Commercial, and Industrial Developments. I was inspired by my father who after retirement from Government job, was working as an Entrepreneur and Contractor for hire of Audio Equipment and Decorative Items.
I joined hands with him and was outsourcing his services for my company. Shortly, I discovered that my passion was more towards Event Planning and Decoration works and I was doing well in Wedding Stage Designs and Decors. That was the turning point in my career. I took small steps at first and gradually, I diversified my business activities to tap into the glamourous world of Wedding Decorations and Marquee Rentals.
Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.
Wedeco Services Ltd provides Marquee Rentals and Decoration services for Wedding Ceremonies, Engagements, Receptions, Corporate Events, Birthday/Beach parties with the utmost attention and delicate care to a wide range of customers in Mauritius.
The company is experienced in transforming Wedding venues to a magnificent welcoming area, right from decorations at the entrance, seating arrangements, stage decorations, to catering area. We are expert in combining colours, backdrops, drapes, and lighting to create the magic that brings into reality the dreams and visions of our valued customers.
Our strength lies in our innovative ideas, staff, and quality custom designed decorations.
Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?
Financial constraints were the biggest challenges that I had to face on start of my wedding business with my own savings and family help. I knew I will face hurdles, but I did not lose
hope as obstacles are different for every business. I started without a proper business plan and thus faced financial hindrance. Both business scaling and regulations were hard to comply. Renting an office space was expensive. Thus, to cut costs, I struggled to get the license from the local authority to operate my office from home with limited IT equipment, getting my services known to people via word of mouth marketing and social media, and converted my garage into a warehouse.
As the wedding business is seasonal in Mauritius, I have employed 5 workers with myself as the Director and doing all secretarial works. During Off seasons, I went to prospect the Indian and Chinese markets to source new wedding materials (e.g mandaps) and accessories.
Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?
Managing obstacles in business must be taken positively as it forms part of the business learning process. To achieve success in any business, it is very important to set a goal, objective, trust your working partners, and to stay lean.
Benchmarking my services with other top companies with best practices has been very helpful to improve on my performances.
My primary goal is to offer an elegant, affordable, available venue for customers seeking an alternative setting for their events, weddings, or vow renewals. Thus, heading towards this goal with my set objectives, I have grown into an experienced businessman/entrepreneur while sourcing materials from international suppliers and visiting international fairs to upgrade my knowledge. I have expanded my business operations and diversified my services to attract new customers.
Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?
I have built up and strengthen my contacts and today I am happy to have an effective network with people in the wedding field and film industry, be it local or international. I am grateful and thankful to all my suppliers who trusted my working capabilities and provided many financial incentives which were very helpful for my business to grow. I maintain
discipline at work, and always struggle to deliver quality services with utmost dedication and determination to my customers. Being also a trustworthy and innovative person, I am constantly sourcing mandaps, wedding accessories and creating new themes to present to my customers. Today I am well known in the field of wedding decorations and my portfolio of contacts have been extended to foreigners who wished to get married on the beautiful Island of Mauritius.
Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?
I dream to have my own Luxurious Wedding Palace or Wedding Destination. There is a saying that one should never give up their dreams, so I will make my dream my vision for the next coming years.
Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?
Wedding services is an emerging and lucrative business and to sustain in this type of business, one must provide quality work, high standards of creativity, innovation, and maintain customer satisfaction.
The key to success is to stay innovative and to diversify your products or services. Innovation is important to keep your business relevant in today’s world and to stay ahead of the game. Therefore, it is vital for business owners to learn ways to stay innovative and to ensure that they aren’t left behind in the fast-paced business world.
I would suggest new entrepreneurs to be Fearless and Limitless.
